Rye House is one of the most historically important karting venues in Britain. Built on the edge of Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire, it dates back to the early 1960s and is among the first purpose-built kart circuits the country ever had β the venue talks of "over 60 years of racing history", and the track even appeared in the 1964 film Go Kart Go. Its lasting fame, though, comes from a single junior driver: an eight-year-old Lewis Hamilton first climbed into a kart here in 1993. He has stayed loyal to the place, calling it "a great circuit, run by great people who have been incredibly supportive throughout my career." For most visitors that is the draw β this is where a seven-time world champion's racing life actually began.
The main track is a 950-metre tarmac loop with twelve corners, and it is fully floodlit, so racing carries on into the evening long after other outdoor venues have shut. It was resurfaced in recent years with improved drainage and wider run-off, which keeps it running well in the wet β no small thing for an open-air circuit. At nearly a kilometre in length it gives you room for actual racecraft: braking zones, lines through the corner sequences and consistency over a full run, rather than a handful of frantic laps on a tight indoor loop. Reviewers regularly describe it as fast and technical, and the on-site marshalling gets praised for letting drivers get a proper race in.
Rye House earned its reputation the hard way β as a proving ground for drivers who went on to the very top. Alongside Hamilton, both Jenson Button and Anthony Davidson are associated with the circuit's early-career pipeline, which is why it is sometimes talked about as a spiritual home of British karting. It remains a working competition venue rather than a museum piece: it is home to the Rye House Kart Club, hosts the annual London Cup, and returned to Motorsport UK affiliation in 2024. If you want to race somewhere with genuine motorsport pedigree instead of manufactured hype, this is the real thing.
This is a strong choice for families and young drivers. Rye House runs dedicated junior programmes β cadet sessions catering to very young children and a separate junior tier for older kids β alongside adult arrive & drive, so it suits mixed-age groups and birthday parties well. At the other end, it also serves serious racers: there are owner-driver arrangements, club racing and even a 12-hour team endurance event, so keen amateurs and racing families have a genuine ladder to climb here. Complete beginners are welcome too β no licence or prior experience is needed for standard sessions, and you turn up, get kitted out and drive.
Rye House Kart Raceway is on Rye Road, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire (EN11 0HE), a short hop from the A10 and well placed for north London and west Essex. As an outdoor, floodlit circuit it runs across long hours and into the evening; sessions often go ahead in the wet, but it is worth a call if severe weather is forecast. Food and drink are available on site, so a visit can easily stretch into a half-day out.
Pricing sits in the mid-range for UK karting. Because Rye House runs everything from toddler cadet sessions to club race weekends and endurance events, availability varies a lot by day β book ahead for weekends, parties and group visits, and confirm current session times and prices directly with the venue before you travel.
Rye House Kart Raceway accepts drivers from just 3+ years old. Junior and cadet karts are available, scaled to younger drivers, making it one of the most family-friendly venues in the area.

Rye House Kart Raceway is an outdoor venue. Many sessions do run in wet conditions β and rain karting often produces the most exciting racing β but in extreme weather it's worth contacting the venue directly to confirm your session is going ahead.

“We have been here first time, confusing to go in, where to park and what to do. As soon as you manage to get to the reception a nice young lady she will explain what is what. Track for children it is situated somewhere at the back far left of the premises. Donβt be afraid to go⦔
“As an owner driver parent, I canβt recommend Rye House Karting Club highly enough! π The staff are genuinely friendly, supportive, and always make the kids (and parents!) feel welcome. The track is brilliant fast, technical, and a great place for young drivers to really develop⦔
“Always enjoy this track - also like the stewards and marshalls and how they run things - seem to have the right balance of knowing when to throw yellow flags and stuff and when not to, so you can get a proper race in.”
