GYG Karting in North Wales is widely considered one of the best karting circuits in the UK, if not Europe. This 1100m British Championship venue features dramatic elevation changes and stunning mountain scenery.
TeamSport Cardiff brings indoor karting to the Welsh capital with a 500m multi-level petrol circuit. In West Wales, venues in Pembrokeshire and Haverfordwest cater to holidaymakers and locals alike. The scenic Usk Valley is home to G-Force Karting with its 500m outdoor circuit. This page covers karting across Wales, and — because the two share a racing scene and this region grouping — the leading tracks in Northern Ireland as well.
Wales gives you an unusually wide spread of karting for a country its size, and the choice really comes down to the drive you want. At one end sit big outdoor circuits carved into open countryside, where fast petrol karts and real weather make for proper racing; at the other, tidy indoor tracks in and around the cities run year-round whatever the skies are doing. North Wales is anchored by GYG, a genuine championship venue; South Wales centres on Cardiff and the nearby Usk Valley; and West Wales is served by a pair of Pembrokeshire tracks that save locals and holidaymakers a long drive east. Almost every venue here runs petrol karts rather than electric, so expect engine noise, vibration and the mechanical feel that enthusiasts prize.
GYG Karting near Cerrigydrudion is the standout. Built into the hillside at Glan-y-Gors on the edge of Snowdonia, its 1,100m outdoor circuit has genuine elevation change, cambered corners and a British Kart Championship pedigree — rounds of the British Championships and Club100 have run here, which few rental tracks can claim. It races from age 11 and is rated intermediate-to-advanced, yet first-timers are still well looked after.
In the capital, TeamSport Cardiff offers a compact but clever 500m indoor petrol circuit on Dominion Way off Newport Road, built as a figure-of-eight with a flyover where the track crosses over itself. It runs from age 8 with separate cadet karts for 8 to 12s, making it a reliable all-year pick for families and groups. Out in the Usk Valley near Pontypool, G-Force Karting is an outdoor circuit of around 530m laid out on the old Little Mill Brickworks, edged with racing kerbs and gravel run-off and run by ex-racers — a racing-first, 16-plus venue where wet weather genuinely reshuffles the fast line. Down in Pembrokeshire, Carew Karting is the county's only outdoor track, a floodlit 500m layout on a former WWII airfield near Tenby with quick 390cc adult Thunderkarts and speed-governed 190cc junior karts from age 8.
The Welsh weather makes this a real decision. If you want a session that will definitely go ahead, the indoor tracks are the safe bet: TeamSport Cardiff in the south and West Wales Karting in Haverfordwest — a 300m indoor petrol circuit with five hairpins and a 70m straight at the County Showground — both run all year and suit beginners, juniors and birthday parties. If you want the full racing experience, the outdoor circuits deliver it: GYG's hillside sweeps, G-Force's kerbed tarmac and Carew's airfield straight all reward reading the track and the conditions, and many of them run happily in the wet, which often makes for the most exciting racing of all.
For families and first-timers, head for the indoor tracks and the junior-friendly outdoor ones. TeamSport Cardiff, West Wales Karting and Carew all take drivers from age 8 in dedicated junior karts, with West Wales setting a lower 1.3m height threshold that lets smaller children race where they might miss the cut elsewhere. Serious drivers should aim for GYG, with its championship layout and owner-driver days, or G-Force in the Usk Valley for kerb-to-kerb racing among adults. Across the water in Northern Ireland, Nutts Corner near Crumlin raises the bar again — a 2km International circuit running Sodi GT5 karts at up to 55mph, alongside a shorter 550m National loop — while Eddie Irvine Sports in Bangor offers a 365m indoor track founded by the County Down Formula 1 driver, sitting inside a multi-sport complex that suits mixed groups.
Wales is spread out, so plan your trip around the venue nearest you and check opening days before setting off — several outdoor tracks run mainly at weekends:
Wherever you choose, book ahead for weekends, parties and corporate days, and confirm current prices, session times and any junior height requirements with the venue directly, as these change through the year.
