GYG stands for Glan-y-Gors, the parkland near Cerrigydrudion where the circuit is built — up in the hills of Conwy on the edge of the Snowdonia country, roughly halfway along the A5 between Betws-y-Coed and Corwen. The venue bills itself as Wales' biggest outdoor kart circuit, and it has genuine competition credentials: rounds of the British Kart Championships and Club100 have been run here, which is not something most rental tracks can claim. That mix of a proper race venue you can also just turn up and drive is what sets GYG apart from a leisure-park loop.
The track runs to 1,100 metres and, crucially, it is cut into the natural slope of the land rather than laid flat on a car park. That gives you genuine elevation change, cambered corners and long flowing sections where you carry speed downhill and have to work to keep the kart settled on the way back up. It is a layout that rewards reading the gradient and being smooth, so the intermediate-to-advanced billing is fair — a first-timer will have a great time, but there is enough here to keep experienced drivers chasing tenths lap after lap.
Rental karting starts from age 11, split into a junior class (11–13) and an adult class from 14 up, so families and mixed-ability groups are well catered for. Beyond arrive & drive, GYG runs kids' racing parties, Grand Prix formats for groups of 10–20, and larger endurance events, plus the season-long GYG Championship and owner-driver test days for people racing their own machines. If you want a scenic day out with the option to come back and race seriously, few venues in North Wales cover both ends as well.
GYG Karting is at Glan Y Gors Park, Cerrigydrudion, LL21 0RU, an easy stop off the A5 for anyone travelling through North Wales. There is an on-site café and a briefing room, so you can make a half-day of it rather than dashing off after your heat.
Because the circuit is outdoors and exposed on the hillside, the weather is part of the experience — wet running here can be a real leveller — but it is worth a call ahead if a serious storm is forecast. Pricing sits in the mid range for UK karting; book in advance for weekends, parties and group events, and confirm current session times and rates directly with the venue, as these change through the year.
Drivers need to be at least 11+ to race at GYG Karting.
No experience needed at GYG Karting. The 1100m layout is rated intermediate-advanced, so technique pays but first-timers are catered for.
