From Age 3-4: The Earliest Starts
St Eval Kart Circuit — youngest in the country
St Eval, between Padstow and Newquay, runs a separate small circuit for children aged just 3 to 6 — the earliest verified start in our directory — before the main 1,000m track opens up from age 7. Sessions rotate between junior (roughly 7-12), open and adult-only through the day, and there is a Kids Club for regulars. For a family holiday in Cornwall, it is unusually flexible.
TeamSport Mini Racers — London and Nottingham
TeamSport's Mini Racer format is the best national answer for the under-8s. Brent Cross has a dedicated Mini Racer track for ages 4 to 7 (roughly 1.0m to 1.4m tall) alongside its main 400m circuit — rare in London, where most tracks simply turn younger kids away — plus bowling and an arcade in the same shopping centre. Nottingham runs Mini Racer sessions from age 4 too, with cadet karts for 8-12s and Race Academy lessons for 8-15s. Newcastle also takes Mini Racers from age 4 (from 1m tall), with a shorter starter track for building confidence.
Gravity Wandsworth and Midland Karting
Gravity Wandsworth takes a different route: two-seater electric karts let children from around age 4 ride with an adult driving, and solo racing starts at 8 in speed-limited Family Mode on the multi-level 181m track. Outdoors, Midland Karting near Lichfield runs supervised Bambino sessions for 4 to 6 year olds at the affordable end of UK karting, with juniors racing from 8 (around 1.1m minimum). Ancaster Leisure in Lincolnshire adds a separate electric track for younger children alongside its cadet karts for ages 8-12.
From Age 6: Proper Junior Circuits
Six is when real junior karting opens up. Daytona Milton Keynes is the standout: a dedicated 400m North Circuit keeps young drivers in age-matched Bambino, Cadet and Junior karts while adults use the 1,360m International Circuit — so a family day works without anyone being left out. Three Sisters near Wigan offers junior karting from age 6 on a genuine Motorsport UK licensed race circuit, with kart practice and open racing from 8 and the long-running Bill Sisley kart school for juniors who catch the bug. Whilton Mill — a British Kart Championships venue near Silverstone — starts junior activities at 6, though the faster adult rental karts require at least 1.4m. And JDR Karting in Gloucester runs electric cadet karts on their own junior track for 6 to 11 year olds, stepping up to petrol cadets from 8 to 12 who can share the main track with family.
From Age 8: The National Standard
Most UK venues admit children from 8, usually with a height check — that is the default across the TeamSport chain and most independents. At this age the choice becomes about quality rather than access: cadet karts sized properly for children, marshals who look after nervous first-timers, and separate junior sessions. Our kids' karting guide covers what to look for; the venues above with cadet fleets — JDR, Midland, Ancaster, Three Sisters — are all strong picks for a first race at 8.
Age 11 and Up: Faster Machinery
Two excellent venues set the bar higher because their karts are quicker. RaceWorld near Exeter takes drivers from 11, but its race-prepared 200cc RiMO karts need a minimum height of about 155cm, with a cadet kart from around 145cm — aimed squarely at older children and teens. GYG Karting in North Wales starts rental at 11 with a junior class for 11-13s, on a 1,100m outdoor circuit with real elevation change. Both suit a karting-mad twelve-year-old far better than another lap of a beginner loop.
The Venues to Avoid With Kids
Some of Britain's best circuits are effectively adults-only for rental karting, and turning up with children is a wasted trip. PF International — the country's most prestigious circuit — is strictly 17 and over for rental. G-Force Karting in South Wales has a minimum age of 16. Clay Pigeon Raceway in Dorset sets a minimum of 14 for its hire fleet; younger cadets race there only through the club with their own equipment. All three are superb venues — for the right age group. Check the exact rules for any track in our age restrictions guide before booking.
How We Chose
Every age and height on this page is taken from our verified profiles of the 86 karting venues in our UK directory — not from third-party listings, and not guessed. Where a venue publishes a height rather than an age (or both), we have given what is verified and nothing more. We favoured venues with dedicated junior equipment and separate junior tracks or sessions over venues that simply allow children on adult layouts, and we included a geographic spread so most families have an option within reach. Rules change, so always confirm ages and heights with the venue when you book.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the youngest age a child can go karting in the UK?
Younger than most parents expect. St Eval Kart Circuit in Cornwall has a separate junior track for children aged 3 to 6, Midland Karting runs supervised Bambino sessions for ages 4 to 6, and TeamSport's Mini Racer format takes children from age 4. Gravity Wandsworth offers two-seater karts from around age 4 with an adult driving.
Do kids need to meet a height requirement as well as an age requirement?
Usually yes — the kart has to physically fit. Verified examples: TeamSport's Mini Racer track suits roughly 1.0m to 1.4m, Midland Karting juniors need about 1.1m, Herefordshire Raceway juniors about 1.3m, and RaceWorld's standard karts need 155cm with a cadet kart from about 145cm. Always check both age and height when booking.
Can children and adults race together?
At some venues. JDR Karting's petrol cadet karts let 8 to 12 year olds share the main track with family, and Ellough Park runs cadet karts for juniors on the same tarmac as adult sessions. Many venues instead rotate separate junior and adult sessions — St Eval alternates junior, open and adult-only sessions through the day — so check the format if racing together matters.
Which karting venues should you avoid with kids?
A few well-known circuits are effectively adults-only for rental karting: PF International is strictly 17 and over, G-Force Karting in South Wales has a minimum age of 16, and Clay Pigeon Raceway's hire karts have a minimum age of 14 (younger cadets race through the club with their own equipment). Brilliant venues — just not for a child's first go.
